Study by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE): Most European female parliamentarians have experienced harassment in the workplace


According to the results of the study:

  • 85 percent of women MPs have suffered from psychological violence in parliament;
  • female MPs under 40 are more likely to be harassed
  • female parliamentary staff endure more sexual violence than female parliamentarians
  • the majority of parliaments lack mechanisms to enable women to speak out
  • 47 percent had received death threats or threats of rape or beating
  • 68 percent had been the target of comments relating to their physical appearance or based on gender stereotypes
  • 25 percent had suffered sexual violence
  • 58 percent had been the target of online sexist attacks on social networks
